Hebrews 12:1-2

The verse says that a race is set before us. That means we are all running a race, aren't we?

What kind of race are you running right now? 

Each of us has a different race to run, so we shouldn't compare our race with someone else's.

God has given each of us our own course. 

One thing I know for sure is that our race is not easy.

That's why the writer of Hebrews tells us to run with endurance. What does endurance mean?

It means not giving up, even when something is hard. In Korean, we call it 인내.

That's not an easy word in Korean either, is it? Endurance means you keep going even when you're tired.

You keep trusting God even when things don't go your way. You don't quit when life gets difficult.

The writer says that there is something that hinders you from running the race that is set before you.

Seriously? What does he say? Every weight and sin! 

When we run our race with Jesus, there are people who cheer for us and encourage us.

But there are also enemies who try to sneak in and set traps for us, and sin that tries to entangle us.

They want to slow us down, make us stumble, and stop us from following Jesus.

How can we finish our race then?

Hebrews 12:2 “Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith,  who for the joy that was set before him Jesus endured the cross,

despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” 

Jesus is here. He is the perfect example for us. How does the writer of Hebrews introduce who Jesus is?

He says, “Jesus is the founder and perfecter of our faith.”

We should change our focus from people to Jesus. We don’t just look at the great heroes of faith (Hebrews 11); we look to Jesus.

They looked at Jesus and saw how he endured his own race here on earth and now they encourage us to do the same thing.
